Can the award-winning Chinese film Sight make it in Hollywood?
Since the rise of Hollywood on the global stage, immigrant stories have never been mainstream; they have existed as a niche film category driven by the political correctness of diversity. Chinese faces in Hollywood's formulaic films always play marginalized roles, even for big names like Jackie Chan, Zhang Ziyi, and Lucy Liu, who have openly stated that Hollywood is not an equal place.
Today, Hollywood has realized that to maintain its cultural influence worldwide, it must change and give different ethnic groups a chance to voice their stories. Following the Oscar-winning Korean film Parasite and this year's dazzling Everything Everywhere All at Once, which featured the first Asian Best Actress, Michelle Yeoh, the 2023 film Sight came into my view. This film breaks down prejudices, reminding us to find common ground as humans, bridge differences, and heal others in a world filled with conflict and opposition.
As I wrote this article, internationally renowned ophthalmologist Dr. Ming Wang, the real-life inspiration for the protagonist in Sight, sent me a message. He shared that thanks to everyone's efforts, Sight not only won Best Picture and Best Feature Film at the 50th ICVM Awards but also received the Septimius Award. The Sight creative team was specially invited to attend the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to watch the film and participate in special interviews with Oscar voters.
Behind this groundbreaking Hollywood film with Chinese elements is mutual respect among film professionals and cultural integration. I was fortunate to participate in and witness Sight's journey as a healing, inspirational film breaking the ice and making its way to Hollywood.
